Brisbane 'Plein Air' Designs 2018

Throughout this year I ‘left the studio’ for the first time, working en plein air (painting outdoors), trying to capture the external world.
During the breaks I took on my jogs, I would pull out my phone and make these sort of design sketches of the scene in front of me - using the paint app ‘Medibang Paint’.

A sort of feedback effect began to occur – the more I practised sketching scenes, the more I learned how to easily break up the composition into different layers of coloured forms in front of each other to convey the depth each object existed in, in relation to one another. My desire was to help people appreciate the outside world, to get out of their bedrooms and scan the infinite horizon of wonderful designs just waiting for them to discover.

So, here I present some of my favourite sketches from this exploration into painting en plein-air. There is such high beauty and balance in the external world – both the one created by our species and by God.
